How to Get More Google Reviews for Your Fishing Charter

Reviews decide who gets the call. When an angler searches “fishing charters” plus your town, the map shows three boats, and the one with 180 reviews at 4.9 outranks and outsells the one with 12. The captains with big review counts aren’t luckier or better anglers. They have a system. Here’s the whole thing.

First, Get Your Review Link

In your Google Business Profile dashboard there’s an “Ask for reviews” option that gives you a short link straight to your review form. That link is the backbone of everything below. A client who has to find your profile and locate the review button on their own won’t. A client who taps one link will.

The Dock Ask

The highest-converting moment for a review request is the dock, right after photos. The client is holding fish, the trip just ended well, and you’re standing there. The script is one sentence: “If you had a good time today, a Google review is the best tip you can give me. I’ll text you the link.”

Why it works: it’s personal, it’s timed at peak goodwill, and it reframes the review as something that helps a small business they just spent a day with.

The QR Code

Print your review link as a QR code and put it where clients stand idle: the cleaning table, the cooler lid, the cabin bulkhead. Fish cleaning takes twenty minutes and your clients are watching with their phones out. That’s the moment.

Any free QR generator works. Laminate it or have it made as a small aluminum sign; a faded inkjet printout says something about the operation too.

The Follow-Up Text

Same evening, text the trip photos to your client, and include the review link in the same message: “Great fishing with you guys today. Photos attached. If you’ve got 60 seconds, a review helps more than you know: [link].”

The photo delivery is the reason this works. You’re giving before asking, the message gets opened because it has their fish pictures in it, and the link is one tap away. Captains who do this consistently convert a third or more of trips into reviews.

The Rules That Can Get You Hurt

Google’s policies are clear and enforced:

  • No incentives. A discount or free trip for a review violates policy and can get reviews wiped or the profile suspended.
  • No review gating. You can’t ask only the happy clients or screen people before sending the link. Send it to everyone.
  • Don’t write or buy fakes. Charter markets are small. Competitors notice and report, and Google’s filters are better than people think.

Play it straight. The system above produces plenty without risk.

Reply to Every Review

Replies are visible to every future prospect and they signal an active business to Google. Two sentences, mention the trip: “Glad the kids got their first redfish, Mike. See you next summer.” For the rare bad one: reply calm, factual, and once. Future clients read your reply more carefully than the complaint.

What This Compounds Into

Reviews lift three things at once: your map ranking, your click-through, and what clients will pay. They’re also the cheapest marketing asset you can build, because the cost is a sentence at the dock and a text you were sending anyway.

Reviews work hardest when your Google Business Profile is set up right underneath them. That’s a service we offer alongside our SEO Foundation Package, or read our step-by-step GBP setup guide.
